This article discusses the approaches to Brazilian music and culture in research conducted at the University of Aveiro. The selected sample corresponds to thesis presented from the beginning of the 21st century until 2024 written by professors from Brazilian federal universities who graduated from the doctoral program in music at the mentioned university. Methodologically, this is a literature review, and the documentary corpus consists of the full texts of the doctoral thesis. Quantitatively, we observed that approximately 33% of the texts in the sample present approach related to Brazilian music. Qualitatively, we perceive a reduced space dedicated to Brazilian music and culture in the academic bibliography of the sample, which contrasts with approaches aligned with musical manifestations of foreign origins that have a longer period of consolidation within academic research.
