This article discusses the legend of the Mula Sem Cabeça based on two different versions: an oral narrative collected from a resident of the Northeastern countryside and a cordel poem by author Marion Villas Boas. The main goal is to understand how these expressions of popular tradition convey cultural and religious values that are part of the Brazilian imagination. Through a semiotic analysis, the study examines the symbols, structures, and meanings that permeate both versions, highlighting what remains, what changes, and what tells us about the popular narrative. The research draws on the narrative models of Greimas, Propp, Larivaille, and Cristina Macário Lopes, seeking to understand the functions, roles, and dynamics that underpin the plot in each account.
