Abstract

This case study employs netnography to study the cognitive and emotional effects of mediatized poetry performance on the audience. Understanding these effects involves analyzing the impact that emotions play during the performance, associated with the happening of beauty or catharsis, have on the listener’s mind and body. In order to analyze the responses of the four participants, I drew on cognitive science theoretical contributions, specifically from cognitive psychology, neurobiology and neuroaesthetics. To contextualize and understand spectators’ accounts ethnographically, I examined the relationship between listener, poet-performer and vocalized poetic text in light of concepts proposed by Paul Zumthor, framed within the defining and interrelated aspects of performance as conceptualized by Erika Fischer-Lichte. Cognitive schema is a key factor in emotional processing and produces cognitive biases that favor the interpretation of an information that is consistent with the listener’s knowledge structure and emotions.
