Abstract

The importance and legacy by the Casino Conferences organized by the Generation of ‘70 in 1871 was, and continues to be, fundamental when we talk about any type of intellectual movement which originated a change and reflection on Portuguese history, society and culture. This paper aims to out the historical context and background that led to the emergence of the conferences and then address them in more detail. Subsequently, we will refer to the events that led to their suspension and the dynamic change that resulted in Portuguese minds, such as the division that emerged between the new generation of intellectuals and writers, known as the Generation of ‘70, and the more conservative minds of the Portuguese social and political environment.
