NOVAS IDENTIDADES E GÊNEROS MUSICAIS NO MUNDO GLOBALIZADO: UMA REFLEXÃO A PARTIR DO ESTUDO DOS FESTIVAIS DE MANTRAS DO RIO DE JANEIRO, BRASIL

Abstract

Taking an investigation about the “Festivals of Mantras” performed in Rio de Janeiro by different groups as a starting point, one intends to reflect about the development of hybrid musical genres, understanding them as part of the wider process of globalization that generated the “world music” as well as mediascapes and made possible, by another side, for Brazilian music groups to enter in contact with what is produced in the “global village”. Also one tries to reflect on the possibility of arising new identities through this new musical production. In order to do so one has focused in the musical groups of Rio de Janeiro that took part on the so called “Festivals of Mantras” organized in the town in 2003 and 2004, understanding them as part of the process of globalization once these groups, linked to Indian culture, try to express their peculiarities and differences through the festivals of music that they organize. The model of research adopted was based in a dialogic perspective, searching to elaborate a “polyphonic text” that results from a dialogue with the consultants, giving voice to their routes, the differences among them and between the groups and Rio’s cultural scene.
